A personal story from our head of sourcing & quality

I've rejected more mad honey than I've ever sold.

My job at Real Mad Honey is simple: keep fake, diluted, or unsafe “mad honey” out of our jars. It has made me the most skeptical man in this business — and it's the reason I can stand behind every batch we ship. This is my story, and the standard I hold it to.

Where my skepticism comes from

The first “mad honey” I ever saw was fake

Before I ever worked in this business, I did what you might be doing right now: I ordered “mad honey” from a slick website. Great story, great photos, great price. When I later had that kind of jar tested, the result was what I've since seen over and over — ordinary honey, barely a trace of the compound that makes mad honey what it is.

That jar taught me the rule I've worked by ever since: in this market, a story is not evidence. A mountain is. A lab report is. A standard is. So those are the three things this page will show you.

So I went and sat on the cliff myself

If a story isn't evidence, you have to go collect the evidence yourself. So we went to the source: a valley in far-west Nepal where honey-hunting families have worked the same cliffs for generations. I've sat on that cliff edge in a bee suit while thousands of Apis laboriosa — the largest honey bees on Earth — checked whether I was worth stinging.

What I learned up there: real mad honey can't be rushed, can't be farmed, and can't be faked at the source. The hives hang off cliff faces. The harvest starts with a ceremony. Every step has a person attached to it — and I know them.

You don't have to imagine any of this — we filmed it. The valley, the ceremony, the climb, the harvest. Watch the documentary, then I'll show you the paperwork.

The referee this market needed

Then came the standard I'd been waiting for

For years, my biggest frustration was that mad honey had no referee. Anyone could fill a jar and invent a story — and buyers had no way to tell us apart from the fakes. That's why the arrival of the International Mad Honey Certification & Standards Institute (IMHSI) mattered so much to me: an independent body with a real framework — batch verification (grayanotoxin profiling), traceability codes from cliff to jar, and ethical compliance for the harvesting families.

We put Real Mad Honey through that framework, and we're approved under it. For me personally, it's the standard I'd been holding us to all along — finally with an independent name on it. Don't take my word for that either: the institute is at imhsinstitute.org — go look.

What I check before your jar ships

Every batch gets sampled and sent to an independent lab. I read every report before anything ships: the grayanotoxin level has to sit in our range — potent enough to be real, controlled enough to be enjoyed responsibly. If a batch misses, it doesn't ship. That's the whole policy.

Then it's sealed, coded for traceability, and sent from our US and EU warehouses. What lands on your doorstep is the exact honey I watched come off that cliff — nothing added, nothing heated away, nothing to hide.

Honest expectations

What I tell my own friends

The same thing I tell my own friends: expect a gentle, settling calm — a quieter mind and a body that finally unwinds. Not a trip, not a high. A shift. Start with a quarter to half a teaspoon in the evening, give it 30–45 minutes, and never exceed the recommended serving on the label. Less is more.

And I'd rather lose a sale than skip this part: leave it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, have a heart condition or blood-pressure issues, take medication affecting heart rate, blood pressure or the nervous system, or are under 18. No THC, no CBD, no psilocybin, no synthetic additives — it's honey with naturally occurring grayanotoxins. Unsure? Ask your doctor first.

Don't trust me — check me

“Why should I believe the guy selling it?”

You shouldn't — not blindly. That's exactly why the documentary exists, why every batch report is public, and why we submitted ourselves to the independent IMHSI framework at imhsinstitute.org. My story is just the introduction; the evidence below is the point.

Notice what's not in there: no wild claims, no fireworks. Just calm, warmth, and a clear head. That's the product doing exactly what I checked it would do.

My standard is on every jar.

One real mountain, one real harvest, a lab report I've read myself, and an independent standard checking my work. That's what “real” means around here — and it's in every jar with our name on it.
